After her rise to fame as the breakout star on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and her impressive run on Dancing with the Stars, Whitney Leavitt — as well as her husband Conner and their three young kids — moved their lives from Utah to New York City as she started her run as Roxie Hart on Broadway's Chicago.

Since the show opened with Whitney at the helm in February, she's smashed box office records and extended her run — twice. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE while serving fans her new signature drink at the SoHo location of Cool Sips, Whitney says that she's also made time for intimate moments with the family in N.Y.C. amid the hustle and bustle of stage life.

“They'll come backstage every once in a while to say hi,” Whitney, 32, says of her kids. “They love New York. They brag to their cousins that they get to walk to school. They think it's the coolest thing — I think it's hilarious.”

Earlier this week, Whitney was named the Chief Creative and Brand Officer of the New York dirty soda chain, meaning she'll take an active role in “creative direction and menu innovation, including developing new flavor combinations,” per a press release shared with PEOPLE.

The title is a bit of a departure for the influencer-turned-reality TV star, who told Inc. in an interview that it's one of the first times she's “marketing a company” — rather than just a single product.

One of her first moves in the new role at Cool Sips: launching her signature drink “The Whitney,” which features club soda, sugar-free pineapple, sugar-free peach, sugar-free vanilla, lime syrup and raspberry puree.

“I love television, but I also love being a part of businesses and brands like this,” Whitney tells PEOPLE when asked what's next after her Chicago run. “I could just see that continuing, hopefully continuing to grow and take off, and I just want to be a part of big things like this.”

Over the last month, the Mormon Wives universe has been rocked by the shocking news that production for the Hulu show's fifth season had been halted in the wake of new domestic violence investigations naming Whitney's costar Taylor Frankie Paul.

Leavitt briefly acknowledged the controversy while speaking to Interview Magazine in March, telling the outlet, "I have a lot of emotions about it and I'm still processing everything that's happening, but the safety of human beings, especially children, comes first" — but has otherwise avoided weighing in.

Speaking to PEOPLE last week, Whitney credited her husband for keeping her level-headed through the nonstop headlines.

“My family, my really close personal friends — I keep my circles small, and those are the people that help keep me grounded,” she continued.
