Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart was fined $35,000 after flipping off the refs at halftime in Thursday's 143–135 win over the Utah Jazz, according to the NBA's communications department.
Smart received a technical foul before the end of the first half that led to his gesture. The 31-year-old guard finished the game with 17 points and four rebounds, and shot 5-of-9 from behind the arc in 28 minutes. A few games earlier, Smart finished with a season-high 26 points, shooting 8-of-14 from three-point range in the Lakers' 132-119 NBA Cup quarterfinals loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Smart has been in the starting lineup the last two games after Austin Reaves went down with a calf sprain.
In Smart's first season with the Lakers, he has averaged 10.6 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.5 rebounds. Last season, Smart spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards. He spent his first nine seasons with the Boston Celtics.
The Lakers are 19-7 this season. Their next games will be on Saturday against their cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers, followed by an away game against the Phoenix Suns, before their Christmas Day game against the Houston Rockets.
