Mike Bloomgren praises Carmen Bricillo for New York Giants' OL foundation
The New York Giants' offensive line has taken a huge leap forward in the past several seasons. They have gone from one of the NFL's worst and the butt of all the team's problems to a respectable unit that could be on its way to becoming one of the best in the game.
Much of the success can be attributed to unit coach Carmen Bricillo, who the Giants did not retain after they cleaned house this past January.
Bricillo has been replaced by Mike Bloomgren, who has been an assistant and head coach over the past 20 years at both the college and pro levels. He inherits a group that is ready to take a big leap forward.
"They were, you know, a better offensive line last year than they have been in years," Bloomgren said of his new unit. "I do think Carm (Bricillo) did a great job with this room. I think there was great foundational knowledge in there. I got a lot of respect for Carm. And so, it's again, we're teaching a new system. We're teaching new things to call and new techniques, but so much of it is just being able to assimilate back to what they did. And that gives us a great baseline to start from."
The Giants have four starters returning: left tackle Andrew Thomas, left guard Jon Runyan Jr., center John Michael Schmitz, and right tackle Jernaine Eluemunor. The only new piece is first-round pick Francis 'Sisi' Mauigoa, who will be the new right guard.

The Giants expect the rookie to help make them a more physical and competitive group.
New coaches will always make changes. This group doesn't need to change a lot, but Bloomgren is putting his stamp on them nonetheless.
"You don't change everything, but you got to change something. You're their coach now. How has that been? Yeah, you're changing a system. So everybody understands that. Like, you know, it's part of this deal," he added.
"And if you don't win enough games, systems change, people change. And that's what happened. I think they've all attacked it like pros. And I've enjoyed coming to work with them every single day. Their mindset, their desire to learn and to want more information about the system. It's been so much fun."
Now the fun has to turn into winning.
