According to Cusack, the horror psychological genre has withstood the test of time, so he would be willing to make a sequel to 1408

While Say Anything isn’t getting a sequel anytime soon, John Cusack admitted he'd be willing to revisit another one of his projects.

During a recent screening of the hit 1989 film in Brooklyn, N.Y., the 59-year-old actor revealed that there’s only one movie in his filmography that he would do a sequel for — and it’s not the one you think.

“I was lucky that I never had the desire, or no one asked me to do any sequels,” the Serendipty star shared.

“There's one that I think would be interesting to do, which would be 1408. Just because ... I think today, you know, most movies suck," he laughed, apologizing to the crowd.

While he isn't a fan of how some remakes and sequels have shaped up, he noted that he still enjoys the thriller genre.

“There's still the horror psychological, you know, that Rod Serling kinda stuff," he continued. "That's still pretty pure. If you can pull off something like that, it's fun."

1408, a psychological horror movie, was released in 2007 and was based on the short story by Stephen King. Along with Cusack, the movie featured Samuel L. Jackson and Tony Shalhoub. It centered around Cusack playing a paranormal myth debunker who checked into the infamously haunted room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel.

While Cusack suggested he would be open to reprising his role as Mike Enslin, during the Nov. 30 screening, he noted that he has never been approached by director Cameron Crowe about a potential Say Anything sequel, much to some fans' dismay.

When working on the teen romantic comedy-drama, Cusack gave Crowe some advice that changed his life.

In Crowe's memoir, The Uncool, the 68-year-old shared that he has taken Cusack's words of wisdom with him onto every project since.

In the book, he explained that Say Anything marked his first time directing a feature film, so he had "all these people on my shoulder" watching over him.

“[Cusack] finished this take and immediately all these people were on my shoulder," he remembered. "Cusack's standing there on set, and he motions to me.”

“We go for a little walk. He goes, ‘I've worked with some really good directors. I've worked with Rob Reiner and John Sayles, and I just want to say I'm here to throw down for you,’” Crowe recalled of his conversation with Cusack.

“‘You're going to meet other actors like me, and they're there for you. So when I finish a take, I don't want to look up and see a huddle of people whispering," he continued. "That s--- doesn't work with me. I want to see you and me locked in. Are we doing it together?’ ”

That advice changed how Crowe approached his projects, ensuring the actors were at the forefront of everything he creates.

“You literally cannot pull me away from being as much there for the actor as possible because they are throwing down for you,” Crowe said. “They're going to give you their best stuff to do what you want to do with it. So f------g be there for them.”
