The witchy 1998 classic Practical Magic, starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, is getting a part two, with the women coming back as their characters, sister witches Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman), according to Deadline. Expect the film to hit theaters in September 2026.
In June 2024, the official Warner Bros. Pictures Instagram account confirmed plans for the filmâs sequel. The brand shared a series of memes made with scenes from the original movie, starting the carousel with a clip of Sally running and jumping into Michaelâs (Mark Feuerstein) arms for a kiss.
In May 2025, the studio confirmed on Instagram, âItâs official! Practical Magic 2 is in development and coming soon. đđ§âïž.â
Warner Bros. also shared the news on TikTok, posting a video of Sally and Gillian dancing and sipping their midnight margaritas. âMe and the girls finding out Practical Magic 2 is happening,â the text read.

When does the movie come out?
Practical Magic 2 opens in theaters on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026. It was originally scheduled for September 18 but was moved up a week early.
Who is in the Practical Magic 2 cast?
On June 13, 2024, Kidman confirmed to People that she and Bullock will be returning as the Owens sisters.
She told the publication with a laugh, âYes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And thatâs that. Thereâs a lot more to tell which is why we go, âOK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.ââ
â[We] found a way in,â she quipped.
In July 2025, Evan Rachel Wood cleared up rumors about a potential return as Kylie Owens, saying in her Instagram Stories that she would not be in the sequel.
âI am getting asked about this a lot, so Iâll just clear it up now,â she wrote. âI was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel.â
Wood says she reached out to express interest in returning, but was not offered a role.
âI offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line,â she continued. âI was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.â
In a November 2025 conversation with Ariana Grande for Interview magazine, Kidman offered new details about filming the sequel and confirmed additional cast members. Speaking about her current work, she said, âI produce and then star in a show called Lioness, which Iâm doing right now, but we shot the sequel to Practical Magic over the summer in London, which was so fun.â
Kidman continued, âSandy Bullock and I, and then Joey King and Maisie [Williams]âwe had an incredible cast.â
She said they became very close: âI have such a strong relationship with all those women, so I felt protected and loved. It was just very, very safe.â
Later in the conversation, Kidman reflected on returning to the story after so many years: âAnd to come back to something so many years later and go, âWeâre still able to get this movie made at a big big studio like Warnerâs,â and that Sandy and I were able to produce it and get it made, is insane.â
In April 2026, Bullock also opened up about how important scheduling was for her to be able to join the cast again. Filming happened while they were off from school and could join her on set.
âIâm not going to sacrifice my time with my kids,â Sandra said during a panel at CNBCâs Changemakers Summit. âTheyâd be happy if I was gone, I would not.â
She continued, âI do not do my best work if my children are struggling or if they need something and I canât facilitate it. Iâm raising my children, not anybody else.â
Bullock admitted that she has the âluxuryâ of controlling her schedule while âso many people donât.â
âI understand that grief and that angst when you are at work, going, âIâm not where I need to be right now. Iâm here being performative and doing my job,ââ she said.
Lee Pace, Stockard Channing, Xolo Maridueña, Solly McLeod, and Dianne Wiest also star, but Aidan Quinnâwho played Sallyâs love interest, Gary Harrett, in the original movieâwas not asked to return for the sequel. âAnd if you know the original film, you can probably guess why,â Bullock said during her and Kidmanâs appearance at CinemaCon on April 14.

âNo, I wasnât asked [to come back for the sequel]; I would have said yes, but I wasnât asked. Of course I would,â Quinn confirmed back in February in a red carpet interview with Dublinâs Spin 1038. âThey were both great to work with. You know, most of my stuff was with Sandy, but they were both phenomenal to work with. We had a good time.â
Ultimately, the roles of Kylie and Antonia were taken over by Joey King and Maisie Williams.
What has the cast said about the Practical Magic sequel?
Kidman and Bullock appeared at CinemaCon in April 2026 and shared some details about the upcoming movie, according to Deadline. Kidman said that fans should expect âmidnight margaritas, jumping off the roof and also have our past catching up with us. We have our destinies, and the family. I think itâs going to be really, really fun.â
Bullock, meanwhile, said that filming Practical Magic again âfelt like we came back to a home that we once lived in.â She continued, âWe rebuilt the original house on the cliff. We filled that house with many old and new characters that youâll love and brought Alice Hoffmanâs Book of Magic to life.â
âHome is what this is,â Kidman added, âand getting to return to these characters that have been so loved and so shared, it really has been magical. And being back together, it just clicked.â
King reflected on the role sheâd been asked to take on for the sequel in an interview with People.
âAs fans of the original film myself, ourselves, I feel like when you love something as much as we already love Practical Magic, thereâs just massive responsibility of joining the team and wanting to do it justice,â King shared.
What will Practical Magic 2 be about?
The original Practical Magic follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens who were orphaned as kids and raised by their aunts Francis (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest), who teach them the ways of witchcraft. But a curse placed on their bloodline, which causes any man that an Owens woman loves to die, causes Sally and Gillian to swear off magic in their adult lives. However, some sticky situations lead the sisters right back to casting spells in order to save their lives. The film is based on the same-name book by Alice Hoffman.
On Jan. 24, 2025, Deadline reported that Oscar winner Susanne Bier was in negotiations to direct. Bier is a favorite of both the stars, who have worked with her on various other projects: Bier directed Bullock in Netflixâs Bird Box, and Kidman for the series The Undoing and miniseries The Perfect Couple.
Deadlineâs April 2026 report revealed that the movie âreintroduces sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, part of a multi-generational family of witches, cursed to be loveless for centuries, as they attempt to break a spell by confronting dark secrets and sacrificing for each other.â
Has production started?
Yes! On July 18, 2025, Kidman shared a clip from behind the scenes on set. In the brief moment, she and Bullock are standing by a fake grave in maxi dresses, with Kidman wearing her iconic strawberry blonde wig from the film. They embrace and smile, even after the scene appears to end.
âThe witches are back,â Kidman wrote in the caption. âOwens sistersâ first day on set!â
She offered an update on Sept. 13, 2025, announcing that production had wrapped. The star shared a clip in which she and Bullock are walking together through a golden field in warm summer light, laughing and holding hands.
Kidman wrote in the caption, âThatâs a wrap on #PracticalMagic2! Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic âšâ
Can I see a trailer?
Yes! The first teaser for the movie arrived on April 20, 2026. Bullock kicks off the teaser with a voiceover and says, âIâm sure youâve heard of the Owens family. The ones from Massachusetts. The ones their neighbors whisperâŠare witches.â
âYouâre the Owens sisters,â Pace says later in the trailer. âYeah, everyone we love diesâŠa really horrible death. Itâs not great for the Tinder bio,â Bullock and Kidman explain.
The trailer additionally features Kidman, Bullock, King, and Williams preparing to fly with umbrellasâa nod to the ending of the first movieâand Kingâs character embarking on her own love story with Maridueña. And like the original, there is also a heavy presence of magic.
A series of stills from the movie also arrived alongside the teaser trailer.
