The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold in eight states that may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145:H28 (E. coli O145). Following a recall by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile, earlier this month, Publix is recalling all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries sold at Publix stores after 12 confirmed cases of E. coli infection were reported.
How To Identify the Recalled Frozen Berries
The recalled frozen berries were sold in 10- and 48-ounce bags labeled “Organic GreenWise Whole Blueberries” and “Organic Whole Mixed Berries.” All lots of the frozen berries have been recalled at this time.

The FDA has label images to help customers distinguish the contaminated berries on its site.
The recalled frozen berries were sold at Publix stores only in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

What To Do if You Have the Recalled Frozen Berries
Frutas y Hortalizas S.A. originally initiated the recall after customers complained of digestive illnesses following consumption of the frozen blueberries. At the time of this reporting, 12 confirmed cases linked to E. coli O145:H28 have been reported.
Publix says it “conducted an internal stop sale” of both the GreenWise Blueberries and Mixed Berries at the end of June, and they are still unavailable for purchase. However, consumers may have the recalled frozen fruit in their freezers.
If you have the recalled GreenWise frozen blueberries or mixed berries, you should not consume them. Instead, throw them away or return them to your Publix store for a full refund.
If you’ve already consumed the frozen berries, you should monitor yourself for an E. coli infection. Common symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most healthy individuals recover from E. coli infections within a week; however, young children, older people, and those with weakened immune systems can have more serious complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can be life-threatening.
