David Beckham described his estrangement from son Brooklyn as a "private matter" in a new interview with Variety

The retired athlete declined to comment about his family's strained relationship with the 27-year-old and his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, when asked about the public's coverage of the matter

Brooklyn confirmed his separation from his family and siblings in explosive Instagram Stories in January

David Beckham is staying quiet about his family matters involving son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz Beckham.

In a new June 12 interview published by Variety, the 51-year-old former soccer player — who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on June 12 — was asked to comment about the "vicious" coverage on his household's "strife" and the toll it has taken on those close to him.

But instead of revealing the current state of his and wife Victoria Beckham's relationship with their 27-year-old son, he responded, "To be honest, I'm sorry to stop you there, but that's a private matter," adding, "That's the one thing that I don't want to talk about."

Brooklyn's wedding to Nicola in April 2022 marked the start of a rumored rift between the couple and the rest of the Beckham family, which also includes David and Victoria's other three children: sons Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 21 and daughter Harper, 14.

The Beckhams' drifting dynamic was confirmed when Brooklyn shared a series of messages that detailed his grievances against his parents and siblings on Jan. 19.

Among the posts, one read: "My family values public promotion and endorsements above all else. Brand Beckham comes first. Family 'love' is decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo opp, even if it's at the expense of our professional obligations. We've gone out of our way for years to show up and support at every fashion show, every party, and every press activity to show 'our perfect family.'"

David appeared to address Brooklyn's explosive claims one day later during his appearance on CNBC's financial program Squawk Box while speaking on the pros and cons of social media.

"The bad we've talked about with what kids can access these days, it can be dangerous," he said. "But what I have found personally, especially with my kids as well, use it for the right reasons."

Then he added, of his children, "They make mistakes, but children are allowed to make mistakes. That is how they learn. That is what I try to teach my kids."

Victoria, 52, followed suit in breaking her silence on her son's estrangement in an April interview with The Wall Street Journal's WSJ. Magazine, butdidn't reference him by name.

"I think that we've always — we love our children so much," she said when asked about her children.

"We've always tried to be the best parents that we can be," she added. "And you know, we've been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we've ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children. And you know, that's all I really want to say about it."

In recent months, both Victoria and David have shared supportive messages to Brooklyn on social media. They did so on May 4 in a loving tribute to his 27th birthday.
