Charlie Hunnam hasn't read reviews about his projects in over 20 years

The Monster: The Ed Gein Story star, who started acting in the late '90s, told Access Hollywood that he was less than 10 years into his career when he stopped caring about the critics

He admitted that critics were "not particularly kind" to him about one particular project

It's been over two decades since Charlie Hunnam read a review about one of his projects.

At the Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday, Jan. 4, the Monster: The Ed Gein Story star, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television, told Access Hollywood that he decided early on in his career that it would be best not to pay attention to the critics.

"I don't read any of it. Not for years," Hunnam, 45, the outlet. "I learned that trick early in my career. I've been doing this for 27 years."

In fact, there was one project in particular that inspired Hunnam to make the change.

"There was a film I did called Green Street Hooligans, which ended up getting a huge sort of cult following to it, but the critics were not particularly kind to me when that film came out," Hunnam admitted. "And I said, 'All right, okay. I don't need to go through this again.' "

Green Street Hooligans came out in 2005 and was directed by Lexi Alexander. The crime drama featured Elijah Wood, Claire Forlani and Leo Gregory, in addition to Hunnam.

The film focused on an American who got involved in the brutal world of British football hooliganism. While critics panned the film, moviegoers felt differently, giving it an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the critics' 45% rating.

While Hunnam likely won't be reprising his role as Pete Dunham from Green Street Hooligans, he previously revealed there is one role he would like to revisit.

In 2020, in a conversation with Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM Radio show, the actor opened up about his 2017 action flick King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, admitting the film didn’t find an audience.

“I’d like to go back to King Arthur because there’s a lot of things went wrong during that and a lot of things that were out of our control,” he explained, “and I just don’t think we ended up matching the aspiration.”

“We just didn’t quite make the movie we wanted," he continued, a sentiment he and critics agreed upon.

However, the Sons of Anarchy star's decision to filter out bad reviews also means he rarely hears the good, including praise for his portrayal of serial killer Ed Gein, which earned him a nomination at Sunday's Golden Globes.
