- Aaron Sorkin revealed why Jesse Eisenberg didn't return as Mark Zuckerberg for the upcoming film *The Social Reckoning*.

- Instead, Jeremy Strong is taking over to portray the Facebook CEO.

- *The Social Reckoning *premieres in theaters on Oct. 9.

One actor was noticeably missing from Aaron Sorkin's *The Social Reckoning* trailer released earlier this week: Jesse Eisenberg.

Sorkin, the screenwriter who won his first Oscar for his work on 2010's* **The Social Network*, has revealed why the actor is not reprising his role as Mark Zuckerberg in the film. Instead, Jeremy Strong is stepping in to portray the Facebook founder and CEO.

“I felt like it belonged to him, and he was certainly battle-tested,” Sorkin told *Vanity Fair* of the role that earned Eisenberg an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. The writer said he spent three days trying to convince Eisenberg to take part in *Reckoning*, but the actor remained steadfast.

"He simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy. He doesn't like kids coming up to him in airports with business cards that say 'I'm CEO, bitch' for him to sign," Sorkin said.

David Fincher, who directed *The Social Network*, didn't direct the upcoming sequel as he was busy working on the *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood* spinoff — *The Adventures of Cliff Booth*. As a result, Sorkin pulled double duty this time as writer and director.

Despite Fincher's lack of involvement, Sorkin said Fincher has been supportive, and was the first person to read *Reckoning*'s script.

"He was just very enthusiastic and eager to help any way he could," he said.

Sorkin noted that he bumped into both Eisenberg and Strong at the 2025 *Vanity Fair* Oscar Party when* The Social Reckoning *script was complete. He told Eisenberg he wanted him to read the draft.

Moments later, Sorkin encountered Strong and mentioned the script. Strong told him that if Eisenberg wasn't interested in reprising the role, he would be keen in taking over.

"*The Social Network* was about how Facebook was invented, and *The Social Reckoning* is what it's become," Sorkin added.

A synopsis for the upcoming movie calls it "a companion piece" to *The Social Network* "based on the events that gave rise to the *Wall Street Journal*'s shocking exposé The Facebook Files," published in 2021.

"The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), a *Wall Street Journal* reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network's most guarded secrets."
